Bournemouth experienced a night to remember, marking a significant chapter in their story. While they would have faced tougher tests against teams like Coventry or Hull, they made the most of the opportunity against a Milan side that simply couldn’t keep up. The visitors appeared to be shadows of their former selves, especially after goalkeeper Mike Maignan's early dismissal left them scrambling.
Justin Kluivert got the party started for Bournemouth, slotting home a penalty after a clear foul by Milan. The Cherries weren’t done there; another spot-kick from Marcus Tavernier, following Maignan's reckless challenge, highlighted their dominance. Amine Adli sealed the deal with a stunning free-kick late in the game, leaving Ruben Amorim to reflect on a disappointing return to England. If this performance is any indication, Bournemouth's upcoming match against Manchester United may reveal some striking similarities between the two clubs.
As the match kicked off, the significance of the moment was palpable. Bournemouth, once battling relegation from the fourth tier, found themselves hosting the illustrious AC Milan in a competitive fixture. While the Cherries were celebrating a win over Grimsby, Milan was enjoying victories with legends like Kaká and Inzaghi gracing the pitch. Seeing the Rossoneri's colors on display felt almost surreal.
“How did we end up here?” asked the stadium announcer, a sentiment echoed on a banner waving in the north stand. It's a fair question, especially when considering how a mid-table Premier League team could be favorites against one of Serie A’s most decorated clubs.
The stormy weather was a fitting backdrop for Amorim's visit, yet he stood undeterred by the rain. Unfortunately for him, the downpour was soon matched by the unfolding drama on the pitch. Within eight minutes, Kluivert put Bournemouth ahead from the spot after a frantic start.
Just before the penalty, Kluivert had nearly doubled the lead, missing a close chance after a brilliant setup by Evanilson. Milan’s failure to clear a corner led to VAR intervening, penalizing Koni De Winter for a handball. There were no complaints from Amorim on that one.
Bournemouth, tracing their roots back to Milan's colors from 1970, kept the pressure high. Milan’s Omari Hutchinson struggled to make an impact as Bournemouth dominated the pace of the game. As tensions rose, Maignan made a fatal mistake, shoving Tyler Adams in the face after a corner, leading to a red card that shifted the game dramatically in Bournemouth's favor.
After substituting Hutchinson for backup keeper Lorenzo Torriani, Milan's hopes were quickly dashed as Tavernier netted the second penalty with confidence. With the rain easing, Bournemouth's momentum showed no signs of slowing down.
Milan tried to regroup at halftime, bringing on Adrien Rabiot, hoping for a spark. However, Bournemouth’s Diego Moreira and Gannon-Doak continued to threaten down the flanks, showcasing a relentless attack. Even the weather seemed to conspire against Milan, with wind disrupting set pieces.
Bournemouth, however, didn’t need any help from the elements. As the game progressed, the referee’s decisions frustrated Bournemouth, especially when Lewis Cook was halted in a promising position. Yet, they pressed forward, with Adli finding the net from distance, leaving the home crowd singing joyfully in the rain.
