Bayern Munich is off to a strong start in the Bundesliga, sitting joint top with four wins from their first six matches. However, the club faces a pressing concern as head coach Vincent Kompany recovers from a collapse at the training ground last Friday.
Max Eberl, Bayern's director of sport, revealed that Kompany requires "protection from himself" and that his recuperation will likely take several weeks. The 40-year-old, who previously starred for Manchester City and the Belgium national team, is currently in a stable condition in the hospital, with ongoing examinations.
Initially, Bayern contemplated postponing their upcoming match against Freiburg, but Eberl believes that a successful performance on the pitch might serve as the best motivation for Kompany’s recovery. "Vinnie will be given all the time he needs. We’re not rushing this process," he stated, emphasizing that discussions regarding recovery time would focus on weeks rather than days.
Kompany's health issues arose during a training session where he collapsed while observing Bayern’s second team. He had been battling a virus and even missed a pre-match press conference ahead of the Champions League clash with Arsenal.
Despite his health concerns, Kompany was on the sidelines for the match against Arsenal, prompting Eberl to reflect on whether they should have intervened sooner. “We do everything we can to protect our coach, but he’s such a hard worker that it’s easy to overlook warning signs,” Eberl noted. He stressed the importance of listening to one’s body and recognizing when to step back.
Kompany's track record is impressive. After an illustrious playing career at Manchester City, where he clinched four Premier League titles, he transitioned to management at Burnley, leading them to Championship glory in 2022-23. Although he couldn’t keep Burnley in the Premier League, he took the reins at Bayern in May 2024, guiding them to consecutive Bundesliga titles.
Aaron Danks, Kompany’s assistant, has been in touch with him while he’s in the hospital. "I made it clear that our conversations would not revolve around football. It was all about checking on his health and well-being," Danks shared. With the team rallying around him, they are committed to maintaining momentum as they navigate this challenging period.
