Aston Villa extended their winning streak in the Champions League to three matches with a solid 3-1 victory against Viking at Villa Park.
Ross Barkley opened the scoring with a well-placed header midway through the first half, giving Unai Emery's men an early advantage. Emiliano Buendia then converted a penalty just before the break, putting Villa firmly in control. Alysson’s impressive run set up an own goal, sealing the game, although Peter Christiansen's late volley for Viking prevented Villa from claiming the top spot outright.
Villa showcased their dominance from the first whistle, even with a makeshift lineup that included Joao Gomes at right-back. The Brazilian nearly scored early on when his cross hit the underside of the bar, setting the tone for the evening.
Barkley’s goal came from a corner delivered by Ibrahim Mbaye, who found the Villa midfielder perfectly positioned to nod it in. Buendia, after a couple of near misses with headers, got his name on the scoresheet when VAR confirmed Alysson was fouled in the box, allowing the Argentine to convert the penalty.
Alysson was undoubtedly the standout player, delivering a performance that fans will remember. He not only played a critical role in the second goal but also created the third, sprinting down the field and assisting a cross that deflected off Henrik Heggheim and into the net.
The Villa supporters erupted in chants of 'We are top of the league' as their team celebrated, momentarily enjoying the view from the summit. However, a spectacular volley from Christiansen, validated by VAR, meant Villa would finish the match in second place behind PSG.
Before the match kicked off, the Holte End displayed a tifo reminding everyone of Villa’s glorious past and their determination for future success. While other clubs might have more star power, few possess the clear vision and purpose that Emery has instilled in this Villa side. They are on the rise again.
